Do AZ's Top Businesses Support Or Oppose SB 1062?

Should Gov. Brewer Sign or Veto?

The language of SB1062 is sloppy and vague and the bill was hastily passed with insufficient public debate. Because of this no one can say with certainty what the consequences will be of endowing individuals with a free license to discriminate against virtually anyone in any walk of life who they say offends their religious beliefs.

SB 1062 is in fact, a radical disassembling of existing workplace protection laws and policies in Arizona. SB 1062 also serverely undermines private enterprises' ability to be self-determinative on their workplace non-discrimination policies. What will a company that is inclusvie and diverse, such as Cold Stone Creamery, do if an individual store manager in Arizona decides to exercise the "religious freedom" to dismiss all the employees that offend his or her religious sensibilities? (This could include, but is not limited to: LGBT people, unwed mothers, Muslims, atheists.) Does this law rob private enterprise of the freedom to decide their own policies placing it into the hands of individual employees? Nobody can know at least until the courts sort it out.

How do do Arizona's largest employers think Governor Jan Brewer should proceed on SB 1062? Should she sign or veto? Few have made any public declarations.

Dustin Gardiner of The Arizona Republic just reported how badly Arizona toursit and convention economy has been hit by protests over racial profiling bill, SB 1070. Above see columnist Ed Montini ask, will SB 1062 be the next SB 1070? Will Governor Brewer be the "grown-up" who keeps the "rowdy children" of the AZ legislature in line? For the good of Arizona's economic future, Gov. Brewer needs the counsel of Arizona's most prosperous businesses when deciding whether to sign or veto.

Below, a table of Arizona's Top 20 employers as defined by workforce size. Also included are some successful brands that call the state of Arizona home; brands with national recognition and customer bases, like P. F. Changs', Cold Stone Creamery, PetSmart, Best Western and GoDaddy. Where applicable, the company's rating of LGBT support, as measured by Human Rights Campaign's Corporate Equality Index is included, as it a link to the company's public press contact page.

"Intel values and welcomes diversity in the workplace. Arizona Senate Bill 1062 would legalize actions that directly conflict with Intel’s own non-discrimination policy. That policy was developed in order to create a welcoming business climate for our employees, suppliers and the global marketplace. We believe that SB 1062 would have a detrimental effect on the local business community by promoting discord and damaging Arizona’s status as a hospitable place to grow business and attract top talent."

"As an Arizona employer and a member of both the Arizona Chamber of Commerce & Industry and Greater Phoenix Leadership, American Express requests that you veto Senate Bill 1062.

We at American Express have long worked to create a workplace environment that promotes diversity and opportunity based on individual merit. We are therefore concerned that this legislation could be interpreted to permit discrimination in the marketplace, which would make it difficult for employers to recruit and retain qualified employees, and cause long-term damage to the state’s economy.

By vetoing Senate Bill 1062, you would send a message that Arizona continues to welcome everyone, both individuals and employers, who are willing to help make this an even better state in which to live, work and conduct business."
